What motivated you to really learn Creole?

I helped lead a Service Learning project at my university and really believed the best way for us to grow and learn from the people that we met was to learn to speak their language.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to learn Haitian Creole?

Learning another language is great exercise, but the first time it really pays off is when you’re able to have a conversation and connect with someone you might have otherwise passed by.

What’s been the biggest benefit for you personally since learning to communicate in Creole?

I had the opportunity to get to know the people we were working with in Haiti, and now instead of just remembering snapshots of my trip, my recollection of the experience is based on interactions with individuals that truly had an impact upon me.
